How Do I..

How do I think about building a training and development plan?

Developing an effective plan begins with the broader discussion; What skills are we going to need in the next x years? What do we have in place already? What is the gap? How can we best fill that gap? And of course, all of this derives from larger strategic goals decided upon by senior leadership.

And of course, all of this derives from larger strategic goals determined by senior leadership.  From those strategic goals, identify and agree upon core competencies that all employees need to demonstrate as well as secondary competencies that pertain to specific groups. Assess current staff against those skills and identify individualized development plans where there are gaps. And where you don’t have in-house skills, develop a plan to acquire those skills on the outside. Then in addition to your training and development systems, hardwire those competencies into your hiring and evaluation processes.
